Prerequisites for the LTEI 3rd year bachelor degree
Enrolment in the third year (L3) of the LTEI (Linguistique théorique, expérimentale et informatique) track is open to a wide range of backgrounds. For example, you may apply after two years of language studies, philosophy, or even literature, provided that you have a strong interest in the formal sciences (mathematics and computer science, the learning of which often requires particularly sustained effort). It is also possible to apply after, for instance, two years of mathematics or computer science, provided that you have an interest in languages and theoretical linguistics. Programmes combining formal sciences and the humanities (such as MIASHS – Mathématiques et informatiques appliquées aux sciences humaines et sociales) are particularly relevant. Students from classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles, particularly the B/L stream (though not exclusively), are also welcome.
Please note that, whatever your background, the admissions panel will consider all your grades since the baccalauréat (or equivalent).
All courses in the bachelor’s degree are taught in French – you must be sufficiently proficient to follow lectures, sit examinations, write laboratory reports and give presentations in French. Proficiency in English is not formally required, but it is nonetheless useful for the bachelor’s degree; it will be necessary in order to continue on to the master’s programmes of the Linguistics department.
