In 2025, Université Paris Cité holds steady at 60th worldwide, among the 1,000 institutions selected bythe Shanghai ranking (AWRU). The institution continues its upward momentum in Europe, climbing to 19th place (+1), while maintaining its 4th position among French universities.

The new Shanghai Ranking, also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, was published on 15 August. Holding steady at 60th in the global rankings for the second consecutive year, Université Paris Cité remains firmly within the top 100 universities worldwide while maintaining the 4th spot nationally—a position it has held since its establishment.

“Five years after its creation, Université Paris Cité confirms its position at 60th in the Shanghai Ranking’s top 100 and reaches 19th place in Europe for the first time. This achievement reflects the quality and impact of research conducted across the University’s laboratories, driven by the excellent work within its three Faculties, IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) and Institut Pasteur. It highlights the robust research ecosystem built through collaboration with key partners, including CNRS, Inserm, INRIA, IRD, AP-HP, and regional universities across Île-de-France, with which it jointly oversees the supervision of certain units.

Whilst annual fluctuations offer limited insight into the long-term nature of research, this year’s rankings reveal a downward trend among French universities, which continue to face budgetary constraints with widely recognized consequences for laboratory activity. Now more than ever, it is essential to strengthen support for universities and bring their resources in line with international standards.

Through the training they provide and the research they support, universities are, at the heart of the public higher education and research service, sources of innovation for all the socio-economic stakeholders in the territories and are a key lever for economic independence and national and European technological sovereignty: funding universities and research is investing in the talents of young people and for the future of the country,” explains Édouard Kaminski, President of Université Paris Cité.
