How Circle U. helped me define my career path

Susanna’s journey with Circle U. began with an online course. This first experience allowed her to discover the alliance and marked the beginning of a journey that led her to become a student ambassador, pursue a double degree in Paris, and complete an internship at Université Paris Cité. The Circle U. European alliance brings together Université Paris Cité, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, King’s College London, UCLouvain, the University of Oslo, Aarhus University, the University of Belgrade, the University of Pisa, and the University of Vienna.

Discovering Circle U. through an online course

I was studying for a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences at the University of Pisa when I enrolled in an online course on climate organised by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as part of the Circle U. Open Campus. At that time, I was simply curious to learn more about the topic of the course, but the experience allowed me to discover something more: a network of European universities where students from different countries and backgrounds can collaborate and exchange ideas on interdisciplinary topics.

The course also had a concrete impact on my academic journey. While writing my bachelor’s thesis in environmental art, which focused on the links between contemporary art and environmental pollution, I was able to draw on several of the topics covered during the online classes in Berlin. This experience allowed me to enrich my research with an international perspective.

From participant to ambassador

From then on, I began following Circle U.’s initiatives more closely. I explored the website and social media pages and discovered that the activities offered by the alliance were a good fit for me. While I was beginning a two-year master’s degree in Digital Humanities, I decided to get involved as a Circle U. student ambassador.

My role as an ambassador allowed me to take an active part in the Circle U. community, promote its initiatives, and help raise awareness of the alliance within the University of Pisa. This experience helped me grow, develop my skills in international communication, and further confirm my interest in intercultural environments.

Circle U., a netwoking becoming a stepping stone to my career

Another year has now passed, and my journey with Circle U. continues in a new city and with a new role: I moved to Paris to pursue a double-degree programme established between my university in Pisa and another Parisian university. Since my study programme included a mandatory internship, I immediately thought of Circle U. and I was able to put my network to use!

I applied for an intership position at Université Paris Cité in the Communications Department of the Circle U. team and… here I am today, writing this article! It is strange to think about how each experience, even the unexpected ones, paved the way for the next. If I had not taken that Circle U. course, I would not have become an ambassador, and I probably would not have moved to Paris to pursue a double degree. I would not have found the internship I am doing now either.

This new experience has given me the opportunity to see Circle U. not only as a participating student or an ambassador, but also as an active member of its professional environment. It is also helping me better define my career plans and deepen my interest in communication in an international context.
